Fish River (Ultra) revisited – 15 June 2019
Running a race is very different to volunteering at one. The former is an event, the latter is unique. This was my third visit to the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, having hiked the canyon in 2005 and run the 100 km Ultra race in 2013.
Besides being a privilege, volunteering at the Fish River Ultra 2019 as a back-race marker sweep was not only different, but actually more difficult to traverse, simply because it was all about people. One’s responsibilities increase. Yet, this is what made it so worthwhile, as I got to be reminded again why and how we get to run the trails and races we do – it all happens because of and for people.

This Tale is in recognition of those persons who made this incredible opportunity possible, to those on the sweep team and to those who completed the race. Thank you!
