Addo Elephant Trail Run 44 km – 16 March 2019

Most special moments cannot be orchestrated. Such a moment was had on this well-known ultra trail run in the Eastern Cape of South Africa – the Addo Elephant Trail Run. A faint humming sound was heard coming from behind me, and got louder as the sound caught up with and surrounded me – thousands of wild bees, covering a moving area of around 10 metres squared and a few metres thick, making their way past me in their daily routine. There was nothing I could do, but keep running (and warn the runner in front of me who ducked) and enjoy this unique experience and race I was a part of.

Running this race was no routine, but one of those runs where the wildness of running through a National Park put the routine of running into a perspective of appreciating the natural habitat where wild animals go about their daily routines. It was a case of enjoying something unique, something even the adventure of trail running could not do – by simply being present and a guest to wildness. Enjoy this Tale!
